Context

QOT, the Centre for Quantum Optical Technologies, is a research centre working on quantum optics. We designed its mark and brand book, a family of logos for its five laboratories and the templates the centre uses every day.

01

The idea: two beams, one orbit

Where the mark comes from
Two laser beams tracing crossed orbits above an optical table in a dark lab
Two laser beams tracing crossed orbits above an optical table in a dark lab
The centre works with light. Two beams crossing in orbit became the O of QOT, so the mark carries the lab's own subject. Scene is a visualisation.

The problem

A research centre speaks to scientists, funding bodies and partners at once, and its labs need their own names without splitting the brand. The mark had to say optics without a cliché, sit next to the logos of its funders on equal terms and survive everything from a slide footer to a printed poster.

The work

02

The mark: an O in orbit

Mark · construction · colour versions
The QOT mark in white on brand navy
The QOT mark in white on brand navy
Construction of the mark on a module grid
Four colour versions: white, brand navy, black and light blue
Two paths of light crossing inside the O. The mark sits on a module grid, so the same proportions hold on a slide, a badge and a poster.
03

The centre, marked

Lab entrance · badges · poster
The QOT mark on the glass wall at the entrance to the optics lab
The QOT mark on the glass wall at the entrance to the optics lab
Badges: the centre in brand navy, the QR+I lab in white with its own logo
Poster: the mark and the orbit at full scale
The same mark at the lab door, on a badge and on a corridor poster. Each of the five labs keeps its own name inside the orbit, while the letters stay QOT. Scenes are visualisations.
"

A research brand is a set of rules the whole team can follow, not a logo in one file.

Outcome

A mark and a 19-page brand book, logos for five laboratories built from one system, layouts for LinkedIn and Twitter, a funding bar with partner logos at one size and a photo direction built on light and optics.

Reflection

Science brands usually fail at the second logo: the first lab that needs its own name. Designing the family first meant the centre could grow without coming back for a new mark.
